Eli Turns One, Atlanta Family Documentary Photographer

A first birthday party

This one-year old is something else. He's an old soul, one of those babies that can stare right through you with a look that holds secrets from a different world. His parents get it too. I admired the sensitive attention they gave him as they followed his interests and investigations throughout the party, from hand held walks around the house to ceiling fan explorations. There were several opportunities for Eli to explore the celebratory balloons that were new to his environment. I loved how nonchalant Eli was about all the activity. He explored his smash cake fully enough to need a bath, and then explored the water in the bathtub fully enough to get thoroughly clean. At the end of the party, everyone sat in the dining room reliving and laughing about the birth story and discussing all things baby. A first birthday is as much a celebration for the parents making it through that first year of having a baby as it is about the baby turning one. It's a time so full of intense highs and lows; there are sleepless nights and inconsolable cries, but also a first smile, a first tooth, a first everything. Ultimately, the first year marks the indescribable expansion of the heart to fully include another being into an established relationship. This birthday party was perfectly about Eli, evident in all the adoring smiles of those surrounding him who care so much about him.

A mother daughter morning

These two. They speak the same language. They exude the same full hearted feelings. They are a team, and I love to hang out with them. I've known Stephanie for almost as long as I have been in Atlanta, and Haddie was my daughter's first friend, born a month before her. I met them at their place in Atlanta to photograph them as they leisurely got ready to take a walk around the neighborhood. After the two helped each other get dressed and ready, we were out the door, collecting gingko leaves and exploring a water fountain at a local neighborhood business. Haddie wanted to show me a nearby garden and walking path, so we set out in that direction. Along the way we stopped as Haddie explored her voice's echo, noticed buildings and towers in the horizon, and found sticks to wave around. Stephanie experienced it all right along with her daughter, and watching the two of them was pure magic.

Humble Treasures Outreach

Humble Treasures Turkey Bash

Humble Treasures turkey bash recipient

My inspiring friends Tiffany and Shawn created Humble Treasures, an organization that works to match the needs of individuals with those who can help meet them through donations of clothing and household items. They put together these Thanksgiving baskets for the Community Turkey Bash and were able to give everyone in attendance plates, silverware, napkins, tablecloths, and decorations for their Thanksgiving meals. It was a pleasure to get to watch them do their magic in action. Humble Treasures is taking off in a newly renovated camper to do some amazing things in the community. Please check out their website for ways to get involved.
