An extended family dinner

I couldn't have been more excited about the opportunity to photograph this extended family hanging out at a restaurant in Grant Park. For one, I got to see baby Akira again! Secondly, I'm really fascinated with family dynamics, and these brothers and cousins were more entertaining than I could handle. Seriously, I was laughing so hard, I couldn't hold my camera still. The night was full in both heart and activity. Sister-in-laws gushing over the deliciousness of their babies, brothers playing jokes, and cousins making memories with sidewalk chalk. Just when I thought it couldn't possibly get any better, an uncle pulls out a big bag of swords and other goodies for the kids. By the end of the night, I had figured out the birth order of the brothers and was wishing I could hang out for the rest of the evening. No doubt family is special, and for all the drama and complications that often come with it, it's nights like this that make it all worth it.

Mother and father look down at son in nursery

I met this family a couple months before Akira was born through mutual friends. We hit it off with matching 3 year old girls and an affinity for home births. They are a beautiful family with such serious chemistry that I couldn't help but see if they would let me take pictures of them after Akira was born. We met on a sunny day to document Akira's first bath with his sweet big sister Anaïs by his side to help. It's hard to believe that was 6 months ago. Happy half year, Akira! Here's to another half year of amazing growth! Check out Tanya's blog to read more about these amazing kids here and here

First bath + Birthday cake

HeathDecaturNewbornLifestyle1

It was a rainy spring day in Decatur when I met with The Calcutts to photograph Heath's first bath. Greyson was turning 5 the next day, so they were also making a camouflage birthday cake. Sarah and Adam tag-teamed seamlessly back and forth between the birthday cake preparations and tending to their new son. They were extraordinarily relaxed and settled into their new life as a family of four. Heath was the sweetest newborn with an incredible head of jet black hair that couldn't be any more different than his older brother's bleach blonde hair. His first bath was a little alarming for him at first, but once he knew what to expect, I think he really enjoyed it. Just as the bath was ending, the cake had finished baking. One milestone completed, and one yet to come. I am ever so grateful this family let me into their home to be a part of such sweet memories.
